Marvelous Monday - oops - Wednesday - 08/05/09

Busy busy week.

On Friday morning I posted an ad for an IT Technician. By the time I left at 5, I'd had over 100 responses. Yesterday afternoon I received the 215th response. When I left at 5, I had just finished reading the last response from Friday. I'm about to delve into Saturday's responses.

On the one hand, it's sad that so many people are looking for work. Some of them have 20 or more years experience and they've been laid off. On the other hand, it improves our odds of finding someone who will fit here.

I do need to tweak the ad to make it clear that:
1. this is not a network administrator position;
2. lots of technical lingo hurts your chances.

I'm the one who decides whether or not the resume goes to the decision makers. I'm relatively high on the technology knowledge scale so if I can't understand what you are saying, it's a pretty safe bet our customers won't understand what you are saying (training our customers is part of the job description.)

I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I think it has something to do with all the talent available in this country and the variety of approaches people take. Reading all these resumes gives me a different perspective. It's not just a collection of facts about the application. The facts they choose to include, the way they word it, and the appearance of the resume say a lot about the personality of the person. In an office as small as ours (currently 5 people) it's important to find personalities that will fit together.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have 105 resumes to read.
